The Royal Mail Honours Spirograph with New Stamp
The Royal Mail – that would be the postal service of Great Britain, “Royal” referring to Queen Elizabeth II, in case it isn’t clear – has issued a series of ten stamps honouring Classic Toys.
And we all know, here on SpirographicArt.com, that Spirograph is a Classic Toy. Nice to have the Royal Mail acknowledge it too.
Actually, they have every reason to be proud of it. Spirograph was developed and first marketed by a British engineer, Denys Fisher, and hit the stores in 1965. Kenner acquired the rights for the the American market and started distributing Spirograph in the USA in 1966.
The first patent on spirograph was, according to Wikipedia, registered by a Polish mathematician and inventor, Bruno Abakanowicz, but I have not seen any pictures of his invention. It may have been nothing like Denys Fisher’s plastic gears and wheels which we know and love.
You can purchase the stamp, along with those of the other Classic Toys, on the Royal Mail website here.
PS: Thanks to Jason from New Zealand for the heads-up about this stamp!
series of ten stamps honouring Classic Toys are awesome.
I would love to get a set of the classic toy stamps, but after doing an internet search, I think my purchasing will be not possible. The stamps were issued back in 2017, and today it is 2021. I wish I would have known about them back when they first came out. But I will continue to search.
As a kid, I collected postage stamps. So I was sure there’d be a used stamp market. So I just did a search for “buy used stamps” and found this site. Did a search for “spirograph” in the Great Britain session and found this page: https://www.hipstamp.com/search?keywords=spirograph&parent_id=8
Right now there are 3 copies of the spirograph stamp for sale at less than 1 GBP. That works if you just want to collect it. You can’t send mail with a used stamp.
Thank you so much for posting the website of where I can purchase the stamp. I was able to get one of them at that site. There is only one more left to purchase.
