Wild Gears: Parallel Lines
Aaron Bleakley, the inventor of Wild Gears, has been making videos lately. The chill music and hypnotic, rhythmic motions of the gears are almost as therapeutic as drawing designs yourself.
This video shows him making a pattern with parallel lines using his clever invention of different sized holes. He first draws the pattern with an extra large hole, then adds a donut-shaped circle to the hole to make a smaller hole and draws again. Voilà – a pattern running parallel to the first one – something you can’t do with Spirograph because the holes are all the same size. Then he adds a fatter donut with an even smaller hole and draws the pattern a third time. The result: three parallel lines!
Below the video are some designs I’ve made with parallel lines using Wild Gears.
I think parallel lines are amazing and I love them the best!
Until I saw the video, I didn’t realize that the little donuts could be used in any large hole. I was just using a big hole and a small hole on the same gear to get the parallel lines. I’m glad I kept the bits and pieces. It’s so neat!
