Yes! I just made a quick search for 3d printing models, and it shows some results on thingiverse.com (https://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=spirograph&page=1) and printables.com, but I have no idea how many are compatible with the manufactured set. You could try some out. A set designed to supplement the manufactured sets would be useful for lots of people. Let me know if you do, and I’ll link to it.

On an unrelated note, I’ve been considering 3D printing some of my own Spirograph gears. Measuring the diameters of some gears, I’ve calculated the diameter (in cm, teeth included) to be roughly 21/32 of the tooth count, and tooth height to be around 1.8mm.

The reason I’m doing this is, there’s a lot of missing “gaps” in the Spirograph system that would be quite useful, namely, Gears 21 (Pentagon in ring 150/105), 54 (Triangle variant, but no round one), 70 (We have 30-60, and 80, but no 70), and 90 (7 loops in ring 150/105). I’m also considering printing a 180/135 ring.

The putty holds the rings just fine. Just make sure you don’t have any sticking out into the space where it would catch the moving wheel.

i was also wondering about the putty. i agree the pin holes were often not pretty but i wonder how well the putty will hold the rings, etc. i am on house arrest through the summer (COVID19 and leave from work) so i am looking forward to creating wonders of the world.
